Professional Burnout

I remember getting sideswiped on my way home from the grocery store, and thinking “cool, now I can call in sick to work!” Have you ever had a moment like that?!

Professional burnout is no joke. And some medical professionals wear their burnout as a badge of honor.

I’m here to say that’s BS.

You can be a person who cares for a living, and a person who has boundaries and joy.

What is burnout, exactly?

I like the definition Amelia and Emily Nagoski use in their book (I call it “the trifecta of ugh”):

  • Emotional exhaustion- caring too much for too long;

  • Depersonalization- depletion of empathy, caring and compassion;

  • Decreased sense of accomplishment- futility: feeling that nothing you do makes a difference.

That’s not the full story though. There are other possible explanations- moral distress/moral injury, secondary/vicarious trauma, and compassion fatigue. Pinpointing what’s going on with you can help (name it to tame it).

Damn… this is sounding all too familiar…

I’m sorry if this is resounding with you! Burnout is painful. But knowing that it’s happening is the first step towards feeling better.

Sooooo how do I fix this?

You aren’t broken friend, there’s nothing to fix ! You are whole, perfect, and complete, but you are not finished- there is work to be done.
